Round 6 Wrap-up!
This past weekend was Round 6 of the Senior competition, and round 2 of the Junior competition here in the capital. Vikings again had a strong showing across all grades, and our junior contingent again showing why we were number 1 in 2011!
Junior competition kicked off on Friday night, with the Under 13s White taking on a new team and chalking up a massive 16-0 win! U13s Maroon went down in a tough tussle by 1, but putting a heap of effort in to show they will be competitive this year, and our Under 15s took away a two all draw in a tight match at Tuggeranong. Saturday morning saw Minkey take over Chisholm again, as well as the Under 11s playing on the northern side of town. Under 11 White played short players to a 1 all draw, and Maroon had a 3 to nil win starting our Saturday campaign on a positive.
The men’s contingent lined up all over Canberra on Saturday afternoon\evening, with the only team not playing being SL1 who had played this round earlier in the year. SL2 kicked off mens games for Vikings at Tuggeranong, fighting out a nil all draw in an entertaining match with a goal disallowed and a premature whistle scrapping another. SL3-1 took on St Pats without a keeper (big props to Dave C for jumping in the net without pads) and managed to slot a goal and go down fighting 1-6. Both grassies were playing from the other side of town, with G1 going down to St Pats and G2 continuing their fine season with a win over ANU.
The defending premiers SL4 took on Daramalan in the late afternoon at our home ground, winning comfortably 4-1, which left CL2 and SL3-2 to play in the early evening. SL3-2 had OCHC at Lyneham and ground out another draw with a goal a piece, holding onto the points this week and building for next week, all the while CL2 was taking on United next door. In a fiery match, we led the contest from early in the second half, but following some questionable calls we let a couple in via quick succession in the final minutes to go down 2-1. On a sour note, Davey copped a ball to the head defending a short corner with a tomahawk being recklessly hit as a first shot, resulting in a trip via ambulance and multiple stitches – thankfully he’s okay, however final damage won’t be known until after the swelling dissipates.
Sunday morning saw the Under 18s try to replicate last week, the 18-1s playing the 9am slot against Central and the 2s playing their 2011 rivals Marist Blue straight after. The 1s put in a disciplined showing, taking the points 1-0 over an in form and much improved Central team. The 2s showed again they’ll be tough this year, competing well against a strong Marist Blue side, slotting one but letting a few in, ending up down 1-3 with some big positives and players in new positions.
All in all a great weekend again for Vikings, with the season only just ramping up!
